November 6,  2013

At our last class reunion committee meeting in October, the word was that hospice had been called in for Arline (Schneck) Stevenson. This was relayed to Sal Leibovitz and she made a call to the Stevenson's home.   Arline's husband, Leroy (Steven) Stevenson, verified that hospice had indeed been called upon to help him and Arline.  She is basically confined to the bed.  She has no pain now and is still cognitive.  On Halloween, Steve put her in a wheelchair so she look out and see the kids out trick or treating.

Please include Arline and Steve in your thoughts and prayers!

Janice (Murphy) Neels

I have been lax in checking the class' email inbox. Following is an email that Delores DuPrey sent on March 11th.

"It has been determined that Janice's cancer was a Stage 2, T3.  The T3 has to do with the tissues.  I believe Janice said that out of 22 lymph nodes, she had cancer in 4.  So the doctors have decided that she will need chemo treatments.  And because the chemo is hard on the heart, it was necessary to have a pacemaker inserted.  She had this done recently.  But then a complication occurred.  Some of the connections came loose (leads).   She had to have this surgery repeated.  The doctors said this happens only 1 in 100 times.  Janice said "wouldn't you know I'd draw the 'lucky' straw."

She will begin her chemo in about a week.  These will consist of 12 treatments every other week, for a total of 5 hours each treatment.  She continues to have a positive attitude (much better than I would), but she admits that at times the whole process has been very frustating.  Continue to pray for her
.

Take Care, Delores"

Am sure that Janice will be in our thoughts and prayers as she tackles this big bump in the road!

Janice (Murphy) Neels

Email message from Delores (Smet) DuPrey which is quoted below:

"Janice came home from the hospital on Thursday, January 24.  The doctors are monitoring her heart rate and for the time being, medication seems to be helping.  A pacemaker was mentioned, but that is unwarranted as long as the medication is working. On Friday, February 1, she will be meeting with her oncologist to find out the results of her pathology report. That report will determine whether or not she will need follow-up chemo or radiation treatment.   I talked with her today, and she was having a life line installed, as requested by her children.  They want to guard against her falling, and no one immediately available to assist her.  I think we all need one of those (Ha! Ha!).   I will keep you informed.

Take Care!
Delores"

Well all need to keep Janice in our prayers!

Arline (Schneck) Stevenson

This afternoon, six of us (Larry/Kay Nelson, LeRoy/Arline Stevenson and Everett/Jessie Boyd) gathered for lunch.  It has been a couple of years since we had seen one another, as Arline was not in good health last year due to dealing with a lot of pain and not up to attending the AZ reunion event.   What a difference a year has made.  Since that time, she has been to numerous doctors and/or hospitals and eventually found the help she needed.  A MRI discovered that feelers from a tumor on her lung was wrapping themselves around her spine.  A doctor that she saw said that possibly pinpointing some strong dosage of radiation to the tumor would help her, which it did.  She has since been able to lower her pain meds and feels relatively well.  She still has the need for oxygen (though while on a cruise up the East Coast, they discovered not much need for oxygen at sea level).

Each of you would marvel at her attitude and fortitude and answered prayers have done for her!   We so enjoyed seeing her and LeRoy and you can believe we discussed many things from old times, our kids/grandkids and the present day thrill of growing old.

 Janice (Murphy) Neels

Email Message from Delores (Smet) DuPrey regarding Janice (Murphy) Neels:

"I'll explain the best way I can.  Some news regarding the recent health problems of my good friend and our "54 Classmate, Janice (Murphy) Neels.  She had just returned from a trip before Christmas to the Holy  Land. The trip was exhausting (delays, little sleep, etc.).  She was scheduled for some medical tests, and a baseball-size cancerous tumor was found in the lower right side of her colon.  Her red blood cell count was very low.  The doctor wondered how she kept from passing out.  She had a colonoscopy every 3 years because one of her siblings was diagnosed, treated, and survived colon cancer 14 years ago.  She had the surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Trinity Medical Center ,7th St. Campus, Moline.  The surgeon was able to do the surgery laparoscopically (I hope I spelled that right).  Everything went O.K., but then complications (a mild heart attack ) followed and she was transferred to Trinity West ICU. As of today, Jan. 19, she is doing O.K. and I'm hoping she will be on her way to a full recovery.  I'll try to keep you posted as I learn of the situation.

Everyone, be safe and stay healthy in 2013!

Delores "Tootie" DuPrey"

Many wishes for a speedy and full recovery go out to Janice. Please include Janice in your prayers.

Kay (Slover) Nelson

The  latest news on Kay's medical problem has again changed. As reported, after the removal of her spleen, her platelet count was normal.  Well, that didn't last long as her platelet count soon deteriorated and it was necessary that she go back to having a shot every week to keep them up.   Therefore, each week she must go in for a blood test and then to the doctor for an injection.  What a grind this must be; however, she doesn't seem to complain about it.

Pray that the shots keep her healthy!

Larry & Kay (Slover) Nelson

Reports have been received that Larry and Kay Nelson's recent surgeries went real well!  The the blood test taken from Kay after her surgery indicated that her platelets were within normal level. It appears the spleen was the culprit and there will be no need for further treatment. She should enjoy full recuperation after 3-4 weeks following the surgery.  Larry's throat surgery also went well with excellent results, as his voice is back to normal volume (watch out Kay, he now can yell at you LOL). What wonderful news!  They both are elated with the results and thank God!

Thanks everyone, the prayers have been answered.

                                    ===================

June 1, 2012

Larry & Kay (Slover) Nelson

In January, it was reported that Kay was suffering with a blood disorder (ITP) and the treatment to keep her platelets at a normal level. She took shots every week while she and Larry were in AZ until they returned home in New Hampshire in April. A doctor she saw after returning to NH was not in favor with her taking the shots for a long period of time as they could cause platelet abnormality and he recommended that she have the spleen removed which usually was the culprit that caused the disorder.  After research by Kay and her primary physician, Kay elected to go for the spleen removal (with a 50/50 chance that it would bring her a cure).   I talked to their daughter today and she said the surgery went well; she was doing well and should be released from the hospital in a day or so.

As for Larry, plans are for him to undergo surgery on June 6th to make repairs to his vocal cord after he had a cancerous section removed back in 2010.  Since that time, he has been unable to speak above a whisper.  Hopefully, the surgery will restore his voice to a normal level.

May our thoughts and prayers bring Larry and Kay back to healthy living!

Dick Estes

Quoted (with some editing) a message that was receive from Jim Morrow:

"A few months ago you asked for some good info instead of all the negative. I had a little problem in February.  We came home from Palm Desert to check up on my mother-in-law for a week and  thought it would be a good time to have a quick check up.  Low and behold I spent the next 8 days in the hospital with a heart beating over 200 beats a minute.  A defibrillator was inserted and I am feeling great and I am back to playing golg and we are in Kona Hawaii celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary .  It is great over here and I am happy to be ALIVE and still kicking.  Attitude is every thing.  Thanks for your work.  We will be back in September for Carol 55th Class reunion on Sept 21 and the 22nd."

                                                                        Dick and Carol Estes"

Sounds as though Dick might have been a very fortunate that his problem was discovered before it was too late.  Wishes go out to Dick for continued good health.  In Hawaii - how nice!

Arline (Schneck) Stevenson

Arline was not up to attending the Arizona Reunion event this year.  When I talked to Leroy, he indicated that she has her good and bad days (relies on oxygen to breath).   I happened to run into the two of them at the airport in Mesa and, I must say, that she still looks good and still seems to have a great attitude.  She was to see a doctor that week and possibly her medication would be changed with hopes of giving her new hope and/or comfort.

She still needs our thoughts and prayers!

February 11, 2012

Pat (Harney) Grose

The latest reports on Pat (Harney) Grose is disheartening.  She recently reported that radiation has been discontinued due to the fact the cancer has spread into most of the bones in her body.   Hospice has been called in and she is now receiving morphine, both orally and through patches along with other pain medications.  She seems to be handling the situation with grace.  She is concentrating on getting her affairs in order and is in awe of how great her friends, family and doctors have been in their concern for her.  She said that she is not afraid of dying (more fearful of the pain), as she knows her faith and belief will ensure her eternal life.

Please offer up frequent prayers for either a miracle or that her pain is manageable.

January 18, 2012
Mike Passmore

Word has been received from Ardy McIntosh regarding the passing of another class member, namely, Mike Passmore.  The message is quoted below:

"Mike Passmore died December 27, 2012 after battling cancer for 9 years, especially the last two. His wife, Pat (Miller) Passmore has kept me informed. They have lived in The Villages in Florida for several years"

No further information was provided and an online search for an obituary proved futile.

Deepest sympathy go out to Pat and their family!

Kay (Slover) Nelson

I have been amiss in reporting health problems that Kay (Slover) Nelson is currently struggling with.  In September, Kay was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura which is a bleeding disorder in which the immune system destroys platelets, which are necessary for normal blood clotting).  It is now necessary that she take treatments (infusion and/or shots) to keep her platelets within normal range.  At the present time, it is not known if the doctors can cure or stabilize her platelets or if treatment will be ongoing for the long term.

Also, Kay has a pacemaker and the first part this year it got out of sync, which ended her up in the Emergency Room with chest pains. Adjustments were made to the pacemaker and she was released after spending six hours in a busy AZ hospital.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Kay that she overcomes these medical problems!

Arline (Schneck) Stevenson

According to a Christmas card (which went to Colona and then back to Arizona) that wasreceived from Arline & Leroy Stevenson (and I quote).  "Spent a fun summer in the mountains of Arizona.  Presently, Arline's health issues are the best in six months, although her activity levels continues to shorten."

If memory serves me correctly, it was relayed to me that she has had to go to the use of oxygen to help her breathing.

Pat (Harney) Gross

In recent conversation with Pat, she advised that she doesn't really feel bad, but is experiencing quite a bit of pain.   It has been discovered that cancer has shown up in her ribs and a spot was detected on her liver.  She has been undergoing radiation and has five treatments with five more to go.  Then she will undergo chemo treatments for the spot on her liver.   She says the biggest problem is to get the pain medication regulated so that it is not so much that she can't function but enough to hold off the pain.  She seemed to be in good spirits and still has hopes that she will overcome her problems.

Certainly it is time once again to offer up our prayers for these two classmates!

========================

October 21, 2011

Pat (Harney) Grose

Pat called to advise the status of her recent spinal tap.  When she saw the doctor for the results of the test and her options for treatment, the doctor told her that she had a lot of living to do and not to write out her will.  The treatment available was to have chemo for 25 mins, 5 days per week to control the cancer.  Supposedly, the drug used would not make her hair fall out, nor would it make her ill.  The worse side affect of the drug would be some tiredness due to low blood count. She will also take two shots of estrogen and medication to strength her bones.  She agreed to go for treatment and her attitude seems to be good.

Do doubt this will not be a picnic, so let's keep Pat in our thoughts and prayers.

========================

September 22, 2011

Pat (Harney) Grose

A phone call was recently received from Pat relaying that she has been diagnosed with serious health problems for a third time in recent years.   It seems that tests have shown that cancer has reappeared and is in the bones, namely the spine.   Her previous two bouts were with breast cancer.  On Sept 29th, she will go to Little Rock, AR for a spinal to determine the type of cancer and what type of treatment is needed.  Pat did indicate the diagnosis and/or the prognosis will determine her choice of treatment or no treatment.  As we know, the treatments that Pete Stopoulos went through did bring him quite a bit of time, but certainly was not easy.  This encouragement was given her, however this must be a personal decision.

Pat will need our thoughts and prayers to help her make what might be some very difficult decisions.

Karen (Simmons) Moore

Recently received an email message from Karen regarding her getting back in her home after tornado struck her home on April 16th.  The message is quoted below:

"I continue to wait to get back in my home. The last I heard which was yesterday, was that it will be two more weeks. Then there will be unpacking--it took them 5 days to pack me out.    Love Karen"

It certainly hasn't been a picnic for her these past five months (especially in dealing with contractors) and she still has a lot of work ahead of her.   She previously indicated that she did spend some time in Florida with her daughter and grandchildren which was enjoyable (a little bright spot during bad times).

Our best wishes in getting your life back together very soon, Karen!

April 19, 2011

In the Class of '54 email inbox today was a disturbing message from Karen (Simmons) Moore dated Sunday, April 17th at 9:02 p.m. who resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina which is quoted below:

"HI Jessie, Yesterday I was lying face down in my hallway while a serious tornado tore apart my home and all surrounding it. The trees I love and often paint are now chopped off and sticking through my roof, piled on top my car and laying everywhere you look. Part of my house is torn off and the rain is coming in. However I am fine."  Karen.

Karen will certainly need our thoughts and prayers during the coming months, as she tries to put her life back together.

William 'Bill' Thurber, 77

As a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Bill Thurber did not expect worldly honors: Jesus didn't take them for himself, nor give them to his disciples. Instead, Bill filled his life with character and a deep love for people — and their need for salvation.
Pastor Thurber, a true soul winner, went to be with the Lord on Friday evening April 15, 2011, from the James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his adoring family. Pastor was 77.
Born Sept. 2, 1933, in Doylestown, Wis., the son of John D. and Zelda (Pogue) Thurber, he graduated from United Township High School in East Moline. He took his Bible studies at Tennessee Temple University, and earned his Th.G. (Graduate of Theology) in 1959.  He served four years with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was discharged honorably as Staff Sergeant.
His first pastorate was as youth pastor with Calvary Baptist Church in Peoria, Ill., and in 1962 accepted the pastorate of Henderson Street Baptist Church (now Colonial Baptist) in Galesburg, a congregation he served 10 years. In 1971 he moved his family to Mansfield, where he began a 27-year pastorate of Community Bible Church &mndash; growing the small congregation in size, influence and spiritual maturity. Under his leadership, the church developed and built Thurber Village — a residential retirement complex adjacent to the church building.
Bill never "beat-around-the-bush" when it came to the Gospel, dispensing direction (always tempered with great wisdom) or getting things done – he could get more done in a day than others in a month.  His brilliant mind kept him several steps ahead and complemented his entrepreneurial spirit. He loved to develop new businesses and ventures and equally enjoyed developing and mentoring young ministers.
Bill looked forward to eternal life, all the while relishing this world and its blessings. He lived this life to its fullest and delighted in the unexpected: dressed in a dark suit to preach, Bill typically wore bright and colorful socks: His socks, like his personality, compelled one's attention, without losing their respect.
He is survived by his wife (and grade-school sweetheart) Margaret "Greta" (Hughes) Thurber, whom he married April 3, 1955; their children and spouses, Bill Jr. and Joan Thurber, Becky and Todd Sipe, all of Mansfield, Ohio, Bob and Kimberly Thurber, of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Joy and Gary Bowman, of Mansfield; grandchildren James and Amanda Thurber, Steven and Amanda Thurber, Daniel and Brooke Thurber, Joe Sipe, Bethany Sipe, Tiffany Sipe, Jennifer Sipe, Robert and Ashley Thurber, Jillian Thurber, Kristina Walters and Hannah Benson; great-grandchildren Dillon, Jessica, Ashley, Gracie, Addison, Alexis and one on the way. Also surviving are his siblings and their spouses, Gerald and Betty Thurber, of Sebring, Fla., Jean and Bob MacLeod, of Peoria, Ariz., Joan and Einar Lanzen, of Henderson, Nev., Beverly Jennings, of Moline, Judy and Ralph Richardson of Colona, and Louise Thurber, of Escondido, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Thurber, and a sister, Joyce Chesser.
The Thurber family will receive friends Tuesday, April 19, 2011,from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Ontario Christian Fellowship, 636 South Lexington-Springmill Road, Mansfield, OH 44906. A worship service, giving glory to God for the life and ministry of Pastor Thurber will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the church building. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park, where the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will hold graveside military honors.
Contributions in his memory are encouraged to benefit the Ontario Christian Fellowship Mission Fund, and may be made at the visitation and funeral.
The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, Mansfield, is honored to serve the Thurber family, and private condolences to them may be made online at: www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Margaret and her family at a sad time in their life. Undoubtedly, he will be missed by many people besides his family.

Charles M. (Chuck) Ferguson (As posted in the Harrisburg, IL Daily Register on 12-22-2010

Houston, Texas - Charles M. Ferguson (74) born April 15, 1936 of Harrisburg died in Spring, Texas on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.   He attended elementary school in Champaign moving to East Moline, where he graduated from UTHS in 1954.  He then enrolled in University of Illinois.   After graduation in 1959, he attended law school at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, where he graduated in 1961 with a Juris Doctorate degree.  In 1964, he joined his father in practice in Rock Island.   In 1969, Chuck moved to Harrisburg and was employed by a law firm in Harrisburg.  In 1975, he operated as a sole practitioner primarily in estates, wills and trusts until is retirement in 2000.  Chuck was a past president of Kiwanis Club, Rotary and Saline County Bar Assoc.   He also was a member of the Harrisburg Elks and Saline County Country Club.  He was a founding member of St. Steven's Episcopal Church.  He enjoyed golf, foreign travel and following the Fighting Illini and the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren.

A memorial Mass was held on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2010

P.S.   This came as a shock to people of the QCA.  Woody Woodworth called him in December and discovered his phone had been disconnected.   Woody then contacted Jim Jannes and Jim said that he had talked to Chuck prior to Pete Stopoulos passing away and Chuck indicated one of his daughters had asked him to come live with her.   Chuck told Jim that he would like to hear from Jim when and if Pete passed away.   Jim called him after Pete passed and found that Chuck's phone had been disconnected.   Therefore, no one has any idea what happened as Chuck gave no information of suffering with any health issues.

R.I.P. Chuck.   Sorry you weren't in closer touch with us the past few years.

--------------

Diane & Jim Woodworth are going through some difficult times.  Their youngest son, Mark (52) returned home due to the loss of his job in Arizona and is without insurance.  I believe that in November, he fell and broke two bones in his ankle which require surgery and pinning.   Then shortly after Christmas, he suffered a stroke which required hospitalization.  He is slowly  recovering from the stroke but may have other health issues, along with the fact that his illnesses could wipe out any savings Mark might have had in reserve.    Please place the Woodworths in your prayers.

Will keep you posted, but I'm in AZ and they are in IL, so may be somewhat difficult.

Again this year, the UTHS alumni will be gathering in Arizona on Sunday, March 6th.  This year's event will be held at the Pizza Pit in Mesa, AZ. The Pizza Pit is an off-shoot of Harris Pizza located in Rock Island.   The business is own by two fellows from the Quad Cities.  One of the owners is Cory Valentine who is the grandson of Janice Valentine and great-nephew of Phyllis (Valentine)/Tom Williams.  Sundays are Quad-Cities day.  They ask QCA residents sign a pizza box and they hang them on the walls. Also have numerous pictures of the QCA displayed.  Should be a fun day!   Come one, come all UTHS alumni and join in on the fun.  Let me know if you will be in the area on 3/6.   Further details regarding the event will be forthcoming in Feb.

Harry Bratton

Gail Bratton returned to the Quad-Cites earlier this week and phoned to advise that Harry lost his battle with cancer on October 9th.  His body was cremated in Florida and the family gathered to scatter ashes at a favorite site of his and Gail's and  into the ocean.  Gail said that plans are in the works to hold a memorial/burial service on the Rock Island Arsenal on or about November 12th.  Notice of the memorial service should appear in The Dispatch when plans have been finalized.  Gail also said that she is planning on a luncheon at their house in Moline.

Our sincere condolences out to Gail and the family!  RIP, Harry!

Posted below are the two latest messages (Oct. 21   & Oct. 25  ) received from Ardy/Joan McIntosh.

(10-21-10) "While Ardy has made good progress in therapy his goal of returning home tomorrow has been squashed. As a matter of fact, now the therapist is telling him that he may not leave a week from Friday. He has been working diligently and perhaps over-working though he claims that isn't so. However, the past two days after therapy he has had pain high in his chest and we know that it is likely from the blood clots in the lungs. It is taking awhile for the body to absorb them, apparently. I spoke with the pulmonary doctor's office this afternoon, my question was will PT stir up the blood clots? Answer, Yes. If that happens there is a danger of them traveling and since we don't want to spend another weekend in ER, tomorrow he will see a pulmonary doctor to make sure all is well.

The dr. who visits  patients at SignatureHealthCare said that after reading Ardy's chart, he was surprised to see him
there and to see how well he had done in therapy. He said that lots of people don't make it through what he has been through. I don't think that Ardy knew that he was hanging on by a thread for a couple of days at Piedmont Hospital. The amazing thing is that he has never had any pain from the back surgery.

Dr. Joan thinks that he should do therapy but this isn't a music contest and he doesn't have to get #1! Besides that, it's getting lonely around here and I want him home as badly as he wants to be here! It will take time and we both have to accept that...love to all, Joan
I'd be remiss if I didn't once again say how thoughtful friends and family have been."Dear Jessie,

(10-25-10) "It's me - Ardy. I am home this afternoon because the physical therapist came to the house to check it out and see if it is safe for me to come home. Guess What? The house passed with flying colors and I will come home Friday - four days! I am really feeling quite well and I am sure I am ready to come home. I will have to continue some outpatient therapy, but at least I will be home and Joan can quit the insane traveling back and forth that she has had to put up with for 6 weeks. I have been through a lot in those 6 weeks, but I believe that the issues have settled down. Hope so.

The cards, notes, letters, etc. have been overwhelming and humbling. Friends are so wonderful to have!  Ardy"

 October 4, 2010

Posted below are two email messages (Sept. 30 & Oct. 4) received from Ardy McIntosh's wife, Joan:

9-30-10 "Just a note about the Ardy saga. About 5 p.m. yesterday Ardy called from the care center saying that he had chest pains and that the staff was making arrangements for him to be transported to Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta. I quickly left home for Piedmont, waited a hour and a half for him to arrive; called the care center only to find out that they had sent him to Wellstar Hospital in Marietta--a few  blocks from the care center. Ardy spent a sleepless night there; nothing accomplished medically as they couldn't get the iv in so they could do a CT scan of his lungs.

This morning I called the pulmonary group at Piedmont. One of the Drs. who had seen Ardy when he was in Piedmont said that he would make all the arrangements to get him transported and admitted to Piedmont. So we are back again and very relieved. The dr. said that this time you aren't leaving until we find out what is causing the pain....several possibilities associated with the blood clots in his lungs, post surgery fluid in the chest., etc.

Now--the accommodations, the dr. put Ardy in private room that is a suite. Nice accommodations. My room has a sofa that makes into a bed, occasional chairs, phone, tv, mini kitchen with refrig, microwave, 2nd bathroom. So, I think that I will spend the night tonight so that I will be here in the morning when they begin any additional tests.

Now, we hope that this is the last hospital visit, he has been in Emory Spine hospital, Emory University ER, Care Center #1, Piedmont ER and Piedmont Hospital, Care Center #2, WellStar Hospital ER and Wellstar Hospital, Piedmont hospital....

Thanks for all your support and concern. It's always nice to hear from caring friends and family."

10-4-10"It's Monday afternoon and I cannot give you a really upbeat report. However there is some good news iand that is: his vital stats are stable.

The not so good news is that he is weaker today, experiencing tremors possibly because of the weakness, somewhat disoriented at times, PT was very limited, and quite naturally he is depressed that things are not turning around. Tomorrow will be three weeks since the surgery and the recovery certainly hasn't followed the plan.

We have been assured by the doctors and the staff here that he will go nowhere until the pain is under control. He was taken off all meds Saturday as he was essentially OD'd on the narcotics.

Right now as near as we can tell, his primary pain is from pleurisy.  He is tired of fighting and certainly would welcome a day when he noticed improvement. Since he had the IVC, he theoretically, will have had no more blood clots. His right leg where the blood clot is remains quite sore, red and swollen. The clots in the lungs hopefully will begin to be absorbed by the body however, that process could take several weeks or months. Patience is certainly a virtue and we are both impatient!! Too many things we want to do."

Thanks again to all of you for your good wishes to/for both of us. . Joan
"

Ardy Update

Received the following email from Joan on or about 9-26th:

"Ardy was transported from the rehab facility to Piedmont Hospital late this afternoon. While in ER they ran a number of tests. When I returned home about 10 p.m., the only result they had was an elevated cardiac enzyme. About an hour ago, the physician at Piedmont called to say that Ardy has two pulmonary embolisms....an elevated cardiac enzyme probably stress related....and slightly elevated creatnine indicating mild kidney disease. Yikes, that's enough, huh?

However, we are grateful that there is nothing life threatening just things that have to be monitored. He was started on heparin tonight and will be on coumadin for six months which has to be monitored closely. The physician also said that the 4-5 weeks of inactivity prior to the surgery undoubtedly contributed to the problem; the clots most likely formed in his legs and traveled to both lungs. He will be in the hospital for approx 72 hrs. and then back to a rehab facility.

This wasn't the plan but....Thanks to all for cards, etc. your thoughtfulness is much appreciated.   Love, Joan"

Surely we all hope and pray that now all of his problems have been diagnosed and Ardy can get on with a speedy return to good health.

Dean Stang

Received information from Pat (Harney) Grose on Sept. 28th that Dean Stang who has been enduring health problems for quite some time is now enduring what sounds like a real grind.   He is battling oral cancer and was in treatment in the Quad-Cities until they had no other treatment available to help him.

He was referred to a doctor at Mitchell Hospital in Chicago (a facility that works in conjunction with the University of Chicago) for a treatment that might be of help to him. He will be under treatment at Mitchell Hospital every other week for 9 weeks.  He drives to Chicago; undergoes chemo and radiation therapy from Sunday through the following Saturday.  He then drives back home for a week at home and returns to the hospital the following week to begin another week-long round of chemo and radiation therapy.

Again thoughts and prayers are need for a class member!

Ardy Mc Intosh Update:

Have received two emails from his wife, Joan which is quoted below:

1st e-mail -  9-14 day of surgery: "Ardy did very well and there were no surprises; the dr. performed the surgery as it was anticipated given the MRI assessment. I anticipate that Ardy will be released on Friday and then begins the real test....no twisting of the torso."

Then heard (not confirmed) that Ardy was in a lot of pain after he went home and he returned to the hospital and eventually was admitted to a care center

2nd email - 9-19: " Almost one week after the surgery he is still experiencing a lot of pain and so far managing the pain has been a challenge for the physicians and for Ardy. After a 2nd assessment of the pain by Emory University Hospital physicians, the decision was made to dramatically increase pain medication. Ardy is recovering at a care facility in Marietta and with go PT/OT he will begin to feel as though recovery will be a reality. Recovery will be a challenge but certainly not the challenge that many classmates face".

Hopefully, they can help Ardy without his having another surgery.

Harry Bratton Benefit held September 19, 2010

Harry's benefit went on despite a few problems and was well attended by 54ers in the Quad City area and also thoughtfully supported by those out of the area.  It was planned that the whole Bratton family would be present for the benefit, but due Harry's frail condition, that didn't happen.  Only one son (Todd) was left here to carry out the benefit and he was beside himself trying to handle the load when he wanted to be at his father's side.  No complete accounting of the total amount of funds collected has been conveyed, but believe that the class members probably helped to collect 2/3 to 3/4 of the funds.   GOOD JOB, 54ERS!

Now is the time to place these two classmates in our prayers along with Pete Stopoulos who is in hospice.

Ardy McIntosh

Ardy's E-mail of 9/8/10
"I am having a terrible time with the spinal stenosis and leg pain. I can't stand or walk without leaning hard on a walker and can't lie down, so spend all my time sitting in a recliner, which I can't recline in because the bar where the legs hit hurts the right leg too much. What a bummer! Hate to complain, but know you would want to know. I saw one spinal surgeon last Wednesday and another one tomorrow. The first one told me that surgery was the only option I had left. I do believe that is true. I don't want to go through this again. So, I'll see what happens tomorrow. The other problem is that I probably can't get in for surgery for another 3 or 4 weeks. Oh well., more pain pills and another month of sitting up 24 hours a day. At least it is not life-threatening, so I really fell guilty complaining at all."

Joan's E-mail of 9/9/10
"Ardy's only option at this point is spinal surgery...and about as complicated as it gets.  The five hour surgery will be done next Tuesday.Though he has arthritis in his entire back, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th vertebrae are the ones to be taken care now. They will fuse the 4th and 5th, and they will build new bone using his bone for stem cell regeneration. They have found that much more successful than taking bone from the pelvis, etc. He will be in the hospital for four days and because bone (from stem cells) is slow growing, his activity will be severely restricted for three months--don't bend over, don't lift anything heavier than 1/2 gallon of milk! Guess we'll be eating lightly and no break dancing! The surgery is expected to take five hours. He isn't the least concerned about the surgery because he cannot continue to live with the pain."

Pete Stopoulos

After placing a call to Pete's home, received the following e-mail from his wife, Pat

Hi Jessie ~ Sorry I wasn't able to return your call.  I have been spending my days at Trinity Pathway Hospice with Pete.  He has been there nearly two weeks now.  His mobility and associated problems became too difficult for us to manage at home even with in-home hospice care.  They are taking good care of him there.  Medications are keeping him comfortable but asleep much of the time.  Thanks to all those who have sent caring thoughts. - Pat Stopoulos

Note #1:  It was learned at Jane (Wortman) Stotller's visitation that Jane had been diagnosed with cancer in the lungs and on the brain (which her sister said that she was in denial about).   Jane had suffered with heart  problems over the years and her actual cause of death was a heart attack.   Peggy (Orlich) Pavletich came to the Quad Cities for Jane's visitation and five of the UTHS Alumni gathered at Frank's Pizza to visit and catch up on one another's news.   (Picture on page 7).

Note #2:  Received a phone call from Harry Bratton's son.   He said that his Dad is not doing well and they have stopped treatment of the experimental drugs and no treatment would help him now, in fact could do more harm than good.   Harry's wife, Gail, had returned to the Quad Cities last week to stay until after the benefit on Sept 19, but she had to return to Florida on Saturday to be with Harry.

Hollar's Bar & Grill

4050 27th Street

Moline, IL

Harry's co-pay has left the limits of imagination.  Harry was one of the top athletes to come from the Quad-Cities.   Hello to all of my good friends.   Please come!!!!!

Following is a copy of the e-mail message sent to 1954 class members.

"To: Members of the UTHS Class of 1954

As stated on the class' website, Harry Bratton is battling cancerous melanoma.   He is currently in Florida (near some of his children) seeking treatment with new experimental chemotherapy, which was recently approved by the FDA.   As stated by the family, this treatment is not available in Quad-Cities. Medicare and insurance covers some of the cost, but certainly not all.  A benefit is being planned for Harry on September 19, 2010 at Hollar's Bar & Grill, 4050 27th Street, Moline, IL.   I have attached a copy of the notice (sorry, the picture did not copy very well) which is being posted in local businesses.   This information will also be attached to the  Class of 1954's website.

Tickets to the benefit are $5.00 per person and will include the taco buffet and that person's name in a drawing for door prizes which you do not have to be present to win.  If you would like to attend the benefit, offer a prize or monetary donation or would like to sell a number of tickets, please contact Todd Bratton at 309-716-1653 or Jessie Boyd at 309-792-3273.

Please make your purchase before September 15th so Hollar's will have an idea of the number attending."

Update on Larry Nelson's vocal cord surgery.

Surgery went well for Larry and he is recovering nicely.  Pathology reports indicated that the margins were clear and that all of the cancerous area had been remove.  Now it is the wait to see how strong his voice will come back.  It is not believed that the cancer was of genetic in nature - good news.   Your thoughts and prayers for Larry have been answered.

----------------------------

Update on Sandra Frakes'  and her husband, Don.

Sandra spent eight days in the hospital the first part of August.   She had a complete melt-down - physically, emotionally and mentally.   She is doing better now and is again devoting her attention on Don.   Sickness is taking its toll on both of them.

Don is not improving.  About a week ago, he became very agitated and wanted to go home.   His doctor conveyed to him that he needed 24/7 care and it was an impossibility for Sandra to give him the care he needed.  Something clicked for Don and he settled down.  Don's name has been added to a waiting list for hospice care in Bettendorf.

-------------------------------

It has been reported that Pete Stopoulos is not doing well.   He was recently hospitalized, but has returned home.  It appears his cancer is affecting his leg and he again is wheelchair bound.

Your thoughts and prayers are again desperately need for all the above friends.

  August 10, 2010

In the last few weeks, emails have been received from Sandra (Weekley) Frakes regarding her husband, Don.   Quoted below is the main information from these emails.

July 23rd - Don is back in the hospital with pneumonia and congestive heart failure.  His jaw is badly swollen and painful but they do not know yet what that is, so further testing.  Hopefully it isn’t another bacterial infection.  His mind is playing games and I hope that is just the lack of oxygen.  He keeps wanting to go home.  It took 4 people to get him out of the car at the hospital.  I just can’t believe someone can deteroriate that much overnight.  Hopefully the drugs will get him well enough to bring him home Monday.  Keep us in your prayers.    Sandra"

July 28th.- Don has been transferred from the hospital to Heartland Health Care Center.  He still has trouble breathing and the swelling in his feet progressed up his legs arms etc.  He did start what they call weeping which is the fluids through his pores.  He is very weak and needs help with everything.  He kept saying if he could go home we could get back to a routine of me helping him.  Keep praying I can bring him home.  Doctor says he can not have treatment at this time and maybe all treatment has run its course.  If he ends up in hospice maybe I can hire outside help and bring him home.  Keep praying for him.  I pray that if it is his time then to go before pain sets in.    Sandra"

----------------------

Larry Nelson underwent the vocal cord surgery on July 28th.  Doctors believed at the time of the surgery that the growth was non-malignant, however, this past Tuesday when they returned to the doctor, the lab test showed that it was cancerous.   He is again scheduled for surgery on August 13th at which time they will probably remove the vocal cord and make certain that all margins are clear.    This is quite a concern for Larry and his family because his brother had his voice box removed many years ago and they now wonder if this a genetic pattern.   More to follow after Larry has his second surgery.

----------------------

Harry Bratton called recently and advised that the melanoma has metastasized and spread to his lungs and brain.   He is currently under radiation and is suppose to go on oral chemotherapy following the radiation.   Of course the oral med is very expensive and not much covered by medicare and/or insurance.   A benefit is being planned for September 19th to help defray the costs.   As more is learned about the benefit, the information will be posted on our website.

Hopes and prayers are once again needed for our friends!

Prayers needed for Arline Stevenson, Pat Grose and Larry Nelson:

Quoted below is two messages received from Arline (Schneck) Stevenson.  As she has stated before, "I am not dying of  cancer, I am LIVING with cancer!"  WTG, Arline!

"The last tests I had this spring showed the largest tumor is about 1/3 larger than it was in the fall, the others have also grown and there are 3 new ones in the top area of the right lung each about the size of an eraser, but none of them are interfering with my breathing at this time. I seem to be a bit more tired but then again I am a year older!!!!!   I guess in Arizona we need siestas more often!!!!.   The doctors told me to just go and enjoy , so that is what we are doing!!!!!!!   Thank you for asking but we know we are in the best hands!!!     "WHENEVER TROUBLE COMES YOUR WAY LET IT BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR JOY. FOR WHEN YOUR FAITH IS TESTED YOUR ENDURANCE HAS A CHANCE TO GROW."    JAMES 1: 2,3 (NLT)

Got released from our doctors!
We are planning on heading to Bodega Bay and up the Calf coast  SLOWLY.  If we both are feeling good our daughter and son-in-law would like to meet in Seattle and drive the motorhome to Vancouver Island and then to Vancouver then back to Seattle where they will fly in and out of. They have to be back the 2nd of Oct.  Then we will head south to Mesa.  Love, Arline "

----------------

Just today, I spoke to Pat (Harney) Grose as she had sent a letter awhile back and indicated that her breast cancer had re-occurred and that she was to under go treatment again.  Today, she said that she has had one treatment which was somewhat delayed because of difficulty in getting a port to function.  She seems to also have a positive attitude and is preparing for her hair to fall out again.   She says "no wigs this time and will restore to scarves and hats, as the wigs are too hot."

----------------

Word has been received that Larry Nelson will undergo surgery on July 28th to remove & biopsy a nodule on his vocal cord(s).   Hopefully, the outcome on the surgery will be positive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9, at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, at the mortuary. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens.

Donald "Oz" was born on July 1, 1936, in Hillsdale, the son of George and Janette Churchill Osborn. He was united in marriage to Donna Wainman-Bell in 1965. She preceded him in death on Aug. 31, 1986.

He graduated from United Township High School. He worked at the Rock Island Lines Railroad for 25 years until closing. He then worked at the Rock Island Arsenal until his retirement on Jan. 31, 1994. He served in the Army from 1961-1964.

Oz was a "snowbird" and spent half of the year at his home in East Moline, and the other half of the year in Tucson. In his early years, he was very active in many sports including baseball, basketball and golf. Later on, he loved to play golf and was very proud of his "hole in one" on Aug. 2, 1994, at Golfmohr Golf Course and proudly displayed his award. He was also an avid Cubs and Bears fan. He loved to travel and was a collector of many unique things. He was active at the Tucson Meadows Clubhouse in Tucson, where he lived part of the year.

Survivors include his son and spouse, Michael and Cynthia Bell, Port Byron; and brother and spouse, Lyle and Sharon Osborn, Milan. He had 2 grandchildren & 1 great-grandchild, as well as numerous special nieces and nephews and a granddog. He had many friends and wonderful neighbors in East Moline. Now, for the more lighthearted event (hopefully is reported with some accuracy) as told by Keith Vollrath:

Keith, along with Rod Sohrbeck, Rex Taylor and Pete Wildermuth decided that after the reunion they would go out boating as they use to do when they were in school.   They hitched a boat up and headed for the river, launched the boat and proceeded to cruise the river.   When they returned to dock and end a fun ride, it was decided (for a reason I don't recall) to just back the vehicle part way down the ramp and push the boat up to the vehicle.   Rex wasn't able to help because he had a brace on one of his wrists, so it was up to Keith, Rod and Pete to do the pushing.   In the process, Rod slipped - scraping & blooding one of his legs.  Then Pete fell on to a shoulder he had broken previously.   How did Keith avert disaster, he probably was supervising the operation. (LOL)

Would say this is a good example of a job that "mature" men shouldn't tackle  that was once done as a teenager.   It's a prime example of "don't try this at home".

May 29, 2010

Quoted below is word received from Kathie Stone on May 26 giving an update on Paul.

"They took Paul off the ventilator yesterday.   He tolerated it well and was glad to get the tube out of his mouth.  He was glad to be able to talk again.  He is now in renal failure.  His creatnine (chemical waste molecules) is climbing pretty fast.  They have given him a week and one half.  I do not think it will be that lone.  From the time I was him this AM until the afternoon, he had gone down hill a lot."

The last word (May 5) received indicated he was still undergoing treatment and at that time it was necessary to take him to Clarksville instead of to Vanderbilt due to the flooding in Nashville.  The treatments were taking a toll on Paul and he had little enrgy and had a lack of appetite.  It was unknown that he had been hospitalized again.

Please pray for a miracle from God for Paul.

April 6, 2010

Received an e-mail message from Kathie Stone, wife of Paul Stone, advising that Paul has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.  It has been advised that Paul submit to Chemo and Radiation which should provide Paul more than the weeks that they were previously led to believe he had.

I'm sure Paul and his family will appreciate all of our prayers.

--------------------------------------------------------

Also received an e-mail from Sandra (Weekley) Frakes providing an update on her husband, Don.  As of January, the 14 radiation treatment administered on Don had not started any healing of the fractures in his neck.  Chemo treatments are not working as well as as before on the cancer and he often has to stop treatment for 2-4 weeks because of setbacks.  He is still proned to falling and relies mainly on a wheelchair to get around.  To add to his troubles, he contacted shingles which are starting to heal.  Sandra indicated that he talks about stopping treatment but then he starts to rally and continues. Over the period of the last onset of cancer, he has lost 90 lbs. and basically survives on fluids and bi-weekly IV fluids.  Though it is difficult for them both to deal with, she said that the kids have been great and someone is there to help out every weekend.

Continued prayers are needed for Don and Sandra.

November 14, 2009

A phone received from Sandra (Weekley) Frakes updated the status of her husband, Don, who is suffering with cancer which is now in the bones.  On Sunday, 7th, Don bumped his head when he fell backward at home.  Sandra went next door to get the help of a neighbor to get him up and it just happened the fellow had a friend visiting; the friend offered his help and it also happened he was an EMT (Sandra said his being there was the appearance of an angel).  When they all got back to Don, the EMT questioned Don and mentioned that it might be dangerous for them to move Don as he might have a spinal injury.  Sandra then decided to call for an ambulance. After emergency treatment which included a cat scan, it was determined Don had broken the 2nd vertebrae in his neck which controls  breathing.  Had they moved him, it could have been very disastrous.  Don was admitted to the hospital and his cancer doctor called in.  The doctor did not recommend surgery and didn't want him staying in the hospital because his resistance was low and dangers of contacting other problems - he was released from the hospital on Monday wearing a cervical collar.   He is definitely becoming weaker at time goes on and is still on chemo which weakens him even more.

Please place Sandra and Don in your prayers.

Arline (Schneck) Stevenson's e-mail message:

"Dearest Prayer Warriors!

PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!!!!!!    Our trip to Mayo today was an answer to all the prayers you all have been praying to our GREAT LORD!!!   The tests showed 2 tumors on the right lung and one on the left the exact same size as they were the first of May!    THE OTHER THREE TUMORS ON THE LOWER LEFT LUNG DO NOT SHOW UP AT ALL!!!!!   The doctor is amazed and we just nodded our heads and said "THANK YOU LORD! "   We all know that our God can do marvelous things and He certainly has shown us over and over His great power.  The doctor does not feel I need to come back for 6 months!  WOW!      I have been having a lot of headaches the past month and the head scan showed  only brains!  That also  pleased us and now we will look for a different answer to that situation.  They have set up an appointment with a neurologist to see what is going on there but it is not cancer!   To God be the glory!

My prayer now is just praise and honor to our Heavenly Father and I thank Him for each breath of this life He has given me.  May He continue to show me how I can make the most of each step in my life in order to continue the work He has for me. In closing this scripture keeps coming before me.    '' WHENEVER TROUBLE COMES YOUR WAY, LET IT BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR JOY.  WHEN YOUR FAITH IS TESTED YOUR ENDURANCE HAS A CHANCE TO GROW."  James 1:2,3    Thank you again for all the wonderful prayers!       Go With God, love, Arline

I am not dying of  cancer, I am LIVING with cancer!

Prayers are with you, Arline, that future reports are as good as the one above or even better!

Received the following email message on Aug. 6th from Sandra (Weekley) Frakes regarding he husband, Don:  They are certainly are going through some tough times!

"Sorry  I haven't been in touch for a while.  Don has had a bad two weeks and I have to take hime to the Dr. and hospital last Monday.  I got him home today  but I don't know if he was ready.  I mean he wanted to get home but he is really weak.  Somehow we managed.  I guess he has a bacterial infection that is causing all kinds of havoc.  Visiting nurse will be here tomorrow to show me how to do the antibiotic infusion.  This freaks me out a little.

Love to my friends, Sandra".

July 5, 2009

The reunion committee received word that Shirley (Cobert) May had passed away.  After a search of the web and the Dispatch, the following obituary was found in the Dispatch which did not give much information on her.

"Shirley M. May of Lantana, FL, formerly of Moline, passed away Dec. 30, 2008.  Cremation was done at Avatar Cremation Services, North Palm Beach, FL.  She is survived by her husband, Dwane; and two daughter, Diane May, Rock Island, and Cari Callis, Chicago."

----------

Word was received from Charles Coutteau that he is doing well after he suffered heart problems on his way back to the QCA this spring.  After his return to LasVegas, one stent was inserted into a blocked artery.  The recent episode was of concern to him, as he had triple by-pass heart surgery in 2002.

Hope all goes well from here on out for Chuck!

----------

Just a follow-up regarding Pete Stopoulos from an email message received from him which is quoted below.  I was going to just enter a synopsis of the message, but felt all of you would like to read the entire message - very inspiring!

QC Senior Olympics had the induction on Sat. which was very nice. I was inducted because I hold several local records (16) and also the National Senior Olympic record in the long jump which I set in 1991 at Syracuse,N.Y.  Altho I can no longer run I did participate this year in the football and softball throws for accuracy which was a lot of fun. I can walk, albeit like a drunken sailor, but am not complaining at all.

Just to bring you up to date, if your interested, as you may recall my cancer metastasized to my spine in 2006. I lost all feeling in both legs and was unable to walk. In about Nov. of that year I was put under hospice care which meant I had about 6 months. About 4 months later I began to have some feeling in my legs so my oncologist put me on Tarceva which is a chemo drug ( I had radiation and chemo earlier). I soon graduated from a wheelchair to a walker and then to cane. I was eventually able to walk without any assistance.

About 8 months later I started regressing and they changed the drug to Sutent, also a chemo pill (a month's supply over $7600. Medicare covers about 85% one of the many reasons I am for universal health care). I again started to improve and continue on that course of treatment. My doctor cannot understand why I am able to walk telling me that once paralysis of my kind sets in there is typically no regaining mobility. He says I am writing my own story.
(By the length of this email I think I just did.)

I've played golf a couple times this summer so am trying to stay active. I have very little pain and seldom take pain pills. Didn't mean to bore you, we all have our share of problems.

I do sometimes have to use a walker or cane depending on where I am in my cycle of taking medicine. We recently changed the cycle and I have gone over a month now without any assistance so hoping it continues to work

It also helps to have goals and one of mine was not to be pictured on that board of deceased class members at our upcoming reunion. Sorry I have not filled you in earlier. Have a great summer."

What a trooper you are, Pete!

The following was posted by Dispatch on June 24, 2009

"At this year"s Quad Cities Senior Olympics (QCSO), on June 26th and 27th, eight individuals will be inducted into the QCSO Hall of Fame at the closing ceremony and dinner. These individuals have either served the Senior Olympics as outstanding leaders, volunteers or participants. According to Terry Kramer, Co-chair of the 2009 games, "It is the very least we can do to recognize these individuals who exemplify the best of what the Senior Olympics has to offer to our community. Our ‘Hall of Famers" are the embodiment of our Senior Olympics motto ‘Enhancing Life After Fifty"." The 2009 Hall of Fame inductees are (in alphabetical order): W.J. "Bing" Bingham, Bud Braunlich, Ruth and Don Johnson, Elinor Nelson, Pete Stopoulos, George Rajcevich, and Fred Whiteside."

An award much deserved not only in the Olympic, but the way you have lived life itself.  Congratulations, Pete!!!!!!!!!

Recently received the following e-mail message from Sandra (Weekley) Frakes regarding her husband, Don:

"Monday, 6/15/09, Don had his first chemo and did really well.  No side effects.  Then Tuesday morning, he started having chest pains so I took him into Trinity 7th St. around  1 p.m. and he had angioplasty on Wed.  All his stents were clear and working but they found 6 more blockages (minor at this time) and doctor did not want to do anything at this time with all that is going on with the cancer.  He is now on a daily nitro med.  He is taking about 15 meds a day.  This just can't be good for him.  I brought him home Thursday and Friday he had an appointment with the nose doctor for a follow-up on the surgery for that cancer.  We can now write off at least one doctor.  He is so weak and feeling faint.  Today we are not doing anything but resting.  Keep praying for him."

Prayers need!

On May 18th, talked to Arline (Schneck) Stevenson who was in the QCA for their grandson's graduation.  As for her health, she indicated that the last tests showed that the tumors detected earlier continue to grow and new tumors have developed.   She says that she is still feeling good.  In fact, they plan to return to Arizona and then head to Utah to do some mission work for their church.

-----------

Janice (Knight) Adamson was told by her local physician that all treatments available here have been exhausted.   She has elected to go to the Illinois University Hospital in Chicago and is participating in experimental treatment.

-----------

Sandra (Weekley) Frakes' husband, Don, will soon undergo chemotherapy for the third re-occurrence of his cancer which has affected all parts of his body except his lower extremities.

Lets pray these three people are blessed with a miracle.

------------

Karen (Simmons) Moore who doesn't return to the QCA frequently was in town for a visit.  The past Saturday, five Silvisites (Dorothy, Diane, Sandra, Jessie and Ginny (See) Shelton and one East Moliner (Nancy Andon Feehan) who has been kind of a stranger in years past, met Karen for lunch.  We spent three hours (could spent a lot longer) having a great time visiting and recalling days gone by.   Those visits with long-time friends become more precious as the years go by.

I have been busy designing a new website for the Class of 1954.  The reason for this being that I have gone with cable connection and soon will close out my account with Earthlink.   The previous website was a free members' service offered by Earthlink; therefore, when I close the account the website will not longer be available to me.  It is my hope that each of you will enjoy the new site and will visit it often.  The link to this new site is:  http://www.uthsclassof1954.yolasite.com.  Please bookmark the site for your future reference.

For your information, here are a couple of news items regarding class members:

Received an email from Maxine (Needham) Carlson in February  in which she stated the following:

"I'm still getting chemo for my ovarian cancer, diagnosed in June of 2005, which is incurable but treatable.   I feel sick a few days after treatment and then feel normal again until the next time."

Address:  4412 32nd Ave. Ct, Moline, IL 61265

Maxine can use our prayers!

Recently learned that Chuck Coutteau is suffering with health problems.  A couple weeks ago, on his way back to QCA from his home in Las Vegas, to attend a banquet for former Rock Island Lines employees, he encountered breathing problems in Salt Lake City, UT.  He was taken to a hospital in Salt Lake City where he was stablized.  After some testing which didn't provide any answers to his problem, the doctors felt he would be more comfortable at home and okayed him to return to Las Vegas.   He will be seeing a cardiologist this coming week and will no doubt go through more testing.  Will provide further info when and if I hear from him.

Address:  5005 Cliffrose Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130

Wishing you well, Chuck!

Several members of the UTHS Class of 1954 met for lunch on March 1, 2009 in Phoenix, AZ. Among those present was Arline (Schneck) Stevenson whom all of us had not seen for a couple of years. As reported previously, Arline is having serious health problems. She advised that the latest visit to her doctors indicated that the cancer has shown up on both lungs and they have told her that no treatment is presently available for her. Arline indicated that she feels good and has the utmost confidence in her doctors. She looks good and seems to have a good attitude. She needs all the prayers of the classmates and hopefully she will be blessed with a miracle.

February 16, 2009

Recently while checking an e-mailbox that I don't frequently use, I found an message from Arline (Schneck) Stevenson regarding her recent medical checkup. I apologize for not getting this posted sooner. Below, I quote the message. I have asked that she keep us posted and when I hear from her, news about her will be posted on the website.

"Dearest Family and Friends,
Finally Feb. 3rd arrived for my appointment at Mayo Clinic to find out the answers to the Jan. 9th PET scan. I had been told that cancer masses showed in both my lungs and more so in the right lung. Dr. Hayden ( the head of ENT) is the pilot of my ship. He went over the report thoroughly with Steve and I. The cancer areas have doubled in size since April. This does not mean they will continue growing at this rate. There is NO chemo that kills this type of rare cancer. Radiation is not possible in this area. I have an appointment Feb. 16th with the thoracic surgeon, who performed my lung resection last March, to see if any surgery would help at this time. Since it is definitely growing in both lungs Steve and I have to have a very convincing cause to go through all of that again. Upon asking Dr. Hayden if there is anywhere else in the country that would have any more experience or skills in this type of cancer he assured us the top cancer centers across the country ( including Mayo) have all joined together in sharing any knowledge that is available. His suggestion is I should be where I had the best relationship with my doctors and to be near my support system----that is all of you! We feel very confident we are at the right place and have the best doctors we could find. We then asked Dr. Hayden what the progression of this disease would be. He very nicely told us " he does not have a crystal ball" but then he sketched out things that possibly might happen.
We have all our trust and faith in our Lord Christ Jesus! The scripture that I prayed all last year was Deuteronomy 31: 8 "Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is the one who goes before you. He will be with you; He will neither fail you nor forsake you." This year the scripture which I am following is 2 Corinthians 1:4 "He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us."
We cannot thank you all enough for the multitude of prayers. You have all been wonderful prayer warriors and we ask to please keep us and our family in your prayers. We will try to keep you updated when there is something to report. Please do not hesitate to call at any time. We are living everyday as usual but hopefully with a lot more focusing on God! Go With God,
All our love, Arline and Steve"

It is now time to double the multitude of prayers for Arline! May she find comfort in the fact that she has such a large group offering prayers in her behalf.

E-mail message received from Ardy McIntosh regarding his stepson:

"Joan lost her 47-year-old son on December 14th, very unexpectedly. He had not been feeling real well since April, but wouldn't go to a doctor because he thought he would get over it. Then on Friday, the 12th of December he walked into the hospital with his wife and they put him in ICU immediately. His wife called and we were on the next plane to Portland, Oregon. We got there very late that night. He knew we were there. Then on Sunday night at 9:30 he died of kidney failure. This was a big shock, of course. We came back home on the 20th. It makes for a sad Christmas. You may remember that I lost my son, Jon (42 years old), to a brain aneurysm in December of 2002. Losing a child is a very difficult thing."

Thoughts and prayers are with Ardy and Joan.

October 8, 2008

Toward the latter part of September, Ardy McIntosh was in town to direct an alumni band at the 55th Anniversary of North Scott High School where is taught for eight years. While he was in town, approximately 20 classmates and spouse gathered for lunch. There were three other UTers from out-of-town (Diana (Stone) Bull, Paul & Carol (Franklin) Batty joined the group. Many present had not seen the three out-of-towners since we graduated. We spent 2-1/2 hours chit-chatting. A fun time for all!

At the luncheon, Gerry Harmon presented a get well card for all to sign which was to be sent to Dick Rittenhouse who recently was a recipient of a pacemaker. If my memory serves me right, Gerry said that Dick had suffered a heart attack when he was 59. Let's hope that the pacemaker will stablize Dick's health. Our prayers are with you, Dick!

On October 6th, the reunion committee met again to work on further on plans for our 55th class reunion. We are presently working on tracking down addresses for classmates and tossing out further ideas for our reunion which is set for September 18 and 19, 2009. Stay tuned for more information as it comes available.

Janice (Knight) Adams was present at reunion committee meeting. It is rare when we see her these days. She is still suffering with cancer and has been under chemotherapy for quite some time. She looked good, but she says that she has good days and bad days. Our thoughts and prayers are also with you, Jan!

Virginia (Geisenhagen) Wanglin, another member of the reunion committee is also among those having health problems. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and currently is under treatment. Presently there is no further information available on her. Best wishes to her on a full recovery!

The following information may be of interest to the "Silvisites" who attended Geo. O. Barr school. Richard Rangel who was a classmate of ours in grade school (never finished high school) passed away on October 4, 2008. His funeral services were held Oct. 7th with burial at the National Cemetry, Arsenal Island. He served in the US Army and had served as an alderman in Silvis. He worked for the Rock Island Lines Railroad and retired from Case/IH with 40 years of service. He also owned and operated Elegante Catering Service.

Then to add to the problems of the family, Kay has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and will be required to take oral chemotherapy for the rest of her life. Evidently, it is a low dosage, but she could lose her hair and have some other side affect from the chemo medication. Kay also stated that though their son, Bill, has made much progress after having a vein malformation rupture in 2006: however, he still has a ways to go before a complete recovery. She said that the trip took its toll on his energy and strength.

March 12, 2008

Information recently received advised that Bob Young has been diagnosed with brain cancer, tumor in sternum, lesion(s) on liver and possibly on kidney. The cancer has passed the blood brain barrier and it is very serious. Six months ago an MRI showed NOTHING!
He has seen his oncologist, has gone to Iowa City to check in with a doctor who is doing a lung study of people who have cancer but have not smoked. He is to start radiation right away on the brain, if they don't get that one checked, it won't matter about the others.
He was asymptomatic with no indications he had anything wrong, just some tiredness from a flu bug he had this winter.
Let's hold Bob up in prayer and pray for a miracle of healing.

First a mixture of old and new news. In September, Larry and Kay (Slover) Nelson arrived in Arizona for the winter. On December 27th, Kay became ill while they were driving to a tennis match. She ended up in the emergency room and on December 28th, doctors inserted a pacemaker in Kay. She seems to have recovered nicely and is feeling good now. Praise God for that. As for Larry, his knees were giving him problems. He saw a orthopaedic surgeon and had knee replacement on Feb. 4th. He is doing quite well and walking without any aid. He is now scheduled for a second knee replacement on March 17th. He will appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

Recently an e-mail was received from Arline (Shneck) Stevenson. Included below are excerpts from that message:

"My cancer has metastasized in my right lung (treated for adenoid cystic cancer in 2005-06). This about blew us off our easy chair. It showed up in my routine PET scan. It is the same rare cancer that was in my salivary glands. After many tests and visiting different doctors at Mayo the tumor team decided the nodules should be removed even tho the cancer will return but this should give us more time. We had a cruise planned for the end of February so we are planning the surgery on the 11 of March. Steve and I are both feeling very comfortable with this. Our faith in God has gotten us through this . We have put all our trust and faith in Him! Praise the Lord!"

Urgent prayers need here!

The latest on Sandra (Weekley) Frakes' husband, Don, is that they recently received some good news. Don's oncologist decided to use the shots of harmony as treatment in an effort to slow or stop progression of his cancer. This last week, after Don had a PSA test, the results showed that his cancer level in the prostate had gone from 5.7 to 0.5. This a very good sign that the harmony treatment is working for Don. Things look so good for them now that they are in the process of packing up and going to Florida for 2+ months. Enjoy Sandra and Don, you've earned it!

Thought all would be interested in reading the e-mail message which was received from Peggy (Orlich) Pavletich, 1173 Hawthorne Lane, Elk Grove, IL 60007.

" Hi Jessie and Classmates
Want to inform you of my recent health issues.
On September 29th, I suffered a "mini stroke" that left NO side effects. I was released from the hospital in 3 days and thought that was it for a speedy recovery! Seems X-Rays and Cat Scans and Pet Scans found a nodule on my right lung, which I dismissed as nothing! My Dr. insisted on a needle biopsy and wanted it done right away;. I went along with the program as I had no cough or other signs of any problem. Results came back .......LUNG CANCER. On Dec. 17th, they operated and removed the Cancer and portion of the lower right lung........Leaving me Cancer free because it was caught in the beginning stages and did not spread to the lymph gland.
My surgeon just informed me that my case is now being used in the class room.
May each of you have a HAPPY HEALTHY NEW YEAR !
Your classmate of '54, Peggy (Orlich) Pavletich"

Pete (Ironman) Stopoulos is doing quite well. Since last publishing information on Pete, he graduated from the walker to using a cane. Word received recently indicates that he is now walking without assistance and has returned to driving. Fabulous news! Keep up the good work!
----------
Now to update you on Dorothy (Givenazzo) Mann. She is doing much better and has returned to work. Hopefully, her new pacemaker will keep her in stable health for a long time to come. She's grateful for everyone's concern, thoughtfulness and prayers!
----------
An e-mail message received from Paul and Kathie Stone stated that their daugther's, Pam, glandular cancer surgery turned out with better results than was predicted. The tumor was not as large as first thought and only a small portion of the tongue was taken at the time the tumor was removed. At this time, no further treatment is deemed necessary. They thanked everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
----------
Now on a sad note, Sandra (Weekley) Frakes' husband, Don, has been diagnosed with bone cancer. This is his third bout with the disease and is not a candidate for chemo, radiation or hormone therapy due to having heart problems. Currently, he is waiting the decision of doctors as to treatment options available to him. Possibly our thoughts and prayers will help them get through this.

Lastly for this update, after seven years of conflicts and construction struggles, Silvis now has a very impressive looking monument dedicated to war heroes located on Hero Street (2nd street) and 1st Avenue. Word from Dorothy (Givenazzo) Mann is that she will receive a pacemaker on Thursday. They removed her from the ventilator last Friday and she is currently taking breathing treatments to clear her lungs. The insertion of the pacemaker will not cure the atrial fibrillation of the heart but will help to keep the heart in rhythm; hence will allow the lungs to function properly to avoid their filling up with fluid. She is in high spirits and is looking forward to going on with her life with less worries of the reoccurrence of the problems of the recent weeks.
----------
The Class of 1957 recently held their 50th year class reunion. My sister, Nancy, talked to Tom Hopkins and he advised her that his brother, Robert (Bucky) Hopkins who was in our class, had passed away in January 2007. Bucky had been in a nursing home for many years (reason unknown). A search was done of the obituary archives of the local newspapers and no obituary appeared in either paper, so have no further details.
----------
Additional thoughts and prayers are needed for:
Blaine Scott, youngest son of Wayne & Shirley Scott who is being treated for aggressive melanoma.
Pam Stone, daughter of Paul & Kathie Stone who was recently diagnosed with glandular cancer who soon with go through surgery to remove a tumor and part of the tongue.

Your thoughts and prayers are desperately needed for Dorothy (Givenazzo) Mann. She has been in the hospital three times in about as many weeks for heart arterial fibrillation which causes her lungs to fill up with fluid. Each time after her release from the hospital, she had been home a day or two, the condition returns. A week ago, she had an angiogram with the insertion of a stent and after going home this last Tuesday (9/11), she was re-admitted to the hospital yesterday (9/12). Her heart was fibrillating and lungs filling up again. Due to her being in severe distress, she was put on a ventilator and put her under heavy sedation. This afternoon, they zapped her heart with electric shock hoping to get the heart into proper rhythm, but it didn't work. She will stay under heavy sedation and the shock treatment will be tried again tomorrow. Sounds so very serious! Lets hope that medical treatment along with our prayers will bring about her return to good health.

Bill gave two magnificent concerts (on a Wed. & Fri. night) and it was a most enjoyable experience for all those in attendance. What a talent Bill possesses, both as a pianist and a composer! Barbara (Miller) Sandberg Passionate about Moline's History
Historic preservation always has been important to Moline resident Barb Sandberg, and now the state has recognized her efforts with an award.
Mrs. Sandberg received the Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commission's service award for her work helping to establish the Moline Downtown Commercial Historic District. The district will be the city's first nationally-designated historic district.
The idea to form a district came after developer Dave Wise Jr., who owns two buildings at 5th Avenue and 13th Street, wanted to pursue tax credits for his rehabilitation project.
Initially, a discussion transpired to hirie someone to do the extensive research on the buildings required, however, funds weren't available, so Mrs. Sandberg volunteered to do the work.
"I volunteered to take on the project, because I felt this would be very much of a benefit to the city economically and (draw) recognition through tourism," she said. "I've always felt that Moline has kept the downtown pretty much intact. What's there is still a solid base to work with."
Mrs. Sandberg estimates she spent 270 hours on the project. Typically, research on a district the size of Moline's would take six to nine months, Mr. Burke said.
She said she found the research very interesting and enjoyed working with city staff to put the application together. "Anybody that I asked for help from down there in any form was more than willing to assist me."
While doing the research, Mrs. Sandberg found 100 historically significant buildings and 14 architectural styles in the district's 33 acres.
Mrs. Sandberg has been on the city's Historic Preservation Commission since 1995 and previously served as 1st Ward alderman.  (Dispatch, July 5, 2007 By Amy Thon)

Way to go, Barb. Sounds like the award was well deserved!

Woody Woodworth has had and is recuperating from the second surgery on his face to remove a cancerous growth. Word is that the doctors were able to get all of it in the second surgery. They were able to remove it without having to disturb the nerves in the face or having to graph skin. Thanks for the prayers - believe they have been answered.
-----------
Recently received the following message regarding Sonja (Sunny Swanson) Wandro's husband, Gale. Address: 15624 W. Greystone Dr., Sun City West, AZ 85375.
"I need some prayers for Gale and for me. He's just been diagnosed with cancer of the liver and both lungs per some CT scans. He will have a liver biopsy on Tuesday, 10/31 and we probably won't hear the results until Friday. That will give the oncologist the information needed to determine treatment.
Gale isn't in any pain...only reason the cancer was detected was because of the blood tests the doctor ordered when he had pneumonia. They showed his liver wasn't functioning properly, thus he had an ultrasound of the liver, which led to the CT scans.
Gale has lost most of his energy in the past couple of weeks and most days food doesn't taste good...but at least there's no pain. He's determined to fight this.
Sunny"
Prayers will be helpful as Gale and Sunny face this crisis.

Jim "Woody" Woodworth received word today that the biopsy indicated that the doctor did not get all the cancer in the first surgery. On October 23rd, Woody will return for a second surgery to remove a larger and deeper portion of the area that contained the cancer. The first surgery turned out to be about the size of a dime and they will now go in and remove an area about the size of a fifty cent piece. The doctor seemed to be optimistic, but indicated it will take a rather long time to heal.

-----------
Since the last update, I have heard from Pat Stopoulos (Pete's wife). She indicated that during their visit to Iowa City Hospitals they learned that Pete is not a candidate for surgery on his back. Currently, they are just treating the cancer with medications. Pete is now getting around by way of a walker; he and Pat have been window shopping for the latest in wheelchairs for him. Pat expressed their appreciation for the well-wishes they have received from classmates.
Needless to say, these two fellows need our thoughts and prayers!

It has been learned that Jim "Woody" Woodworth will go to Iowa City tomorrow, 10/2, to undergo surgery for a micro-cystic adnexal tumor located near a temple on his face. This is type of cancer is rather uncommon and often goes undiagnosed as it appears as an indentation in the skin rather than the atypical skin cancer. The tumor is evidently in an area where many facial nerves are located and is considered to be a sensitive surgery with some risks. Woody needs our thoughts, well wishes and prayers.

On January 29th, several of the '54 class members met in Phoenix for brunch (Arline/Leroy Stevenson, Kay/Larry Nelson, Sunny/Gale Wandro, Sal Leibovitz, Jessie/Everett Boyd). A nice time was had by all.  The best news to report from this meeting was that Arline (Schneck) Stevenson looked very good. She indicated that she was also feeling good and doing well following her treatment for Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. Her taste buds had pretty much returned to normal and she had regained her taste for most foods. The only complaint was that there was still a lump on her tongue (results of the treatment) which was tender. Hopefully when her tongue heals completely, this will be the end of her health problems! She needs your thoughts and prayers.

Update on three of our classmates that have been or are under treatment for cancer.

Janice (Knight) Adams advised that she is slowly feeling better since voluntarily stopping her chemo treatment which her body was finding very difficult to tolerant. Doctors will monitor her carefully in event the cancer (if there was any remaining following her surgery) should flare up.

Pat (Harney) Gross advised me that she had her first chemo treatment on November 19th. She will have three treatments and then will go in for a complete mastectomy in January. She will also receive radiation treatments. When I talked to her, she seemed upbeat and optimistic.

The day that I talked to Maxine (Needham) Barker, she was not feeling very good at all. Just a few days, she had a chemo treatment and they knocked her for a loop for a few days. She had hope to finish her treatments by Thanksgiving, but due to her have a low blood count, they had to way lay one of the treatments. Now she will hopefully finish the treatments the first part of December.

Continue to keep these gals in your thoughts and prayer

July 2004

On Monday, 7/19, Judy Carmichael and myself (Jessie) went to visit Marlene Anderson at Rosewood Health Center. She has been in the nursing facility for approximately 20 years after suffering a severe stroke that left her unable to speak. She is able to understand and loves too have people visit her. We wanted to take her some momentoes from the class reunion (a balloon bouquet, directory, picture and class reunion coffee mug). She was so excited to see us, smiled from ear to ear and wanted a hug from both of us. She was very interested in our naming all the people in the picture. Before we left, she insisted that we each take a small stuff animal that she had on display on her nightstand. Judy and I went away with such a good feeling for make her day just a little special.

If you read the information on the web site previously, you will remember that Mike and Patsy Passmore had to cancel out on the reunion due to Mike having by-pass heart surgery. I am pleased to report that all went well with his surgery and according to Patsy was only in ICU for an hour and was up walking around. She said that he was definitely looking better and his coloring was returning to normal. Haven't talked to them since right after his surgery, but trust he is well on the road to recovery.

Joan (Getty) Gallaugher was also scheduled to attend the reunion but was unable to attend as she ended up in the hospital on Friday night and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Hopefully, she is recovering well also.

On 7/22, I received an e-mail from Paul Stone's wife which stated that Paul had total hip replacement on Monday, 7/19. This morning when they got him up to walk, he had a heart attack. He is scheduled for by-pass (4) surgery on Friday. She indicated that currently he seems to be real confused. Let's keep him in our thoughts and prayers and hope that all goes well with his surgery and recuperation.
